A fine quality late 19th century Italian carrara marble sculpture of ‘Young Dionysus’ (or Bacchus) signed Aristide Fontana - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:

The infant is seated on a naturalistic base, holding a goblet in his right hand with grapes, a lion skin, thyrsos (pine cone tipped staff) and tambourine below, these all being symbols associated with Dionysus/Bacchus and their lifestyle, with signature to reverse ‘Aristide Fontana, Carrara’.

Dionysus, being the Greek God of wine and festivity, fertility and agriculture, Bacchus being the Roman equivalent.

The sculptor, Aristide Louis Fontana, born in 1834 in Italy, known as being active 1871-1885, he had moved to England by 1871 to marry, his works featuring in various exhibitions in England such as The Royal Academy and later returning to Italy where he died.

This sculpture is in very good condition for age with some small losses (commensurate with age), it is of stable construction and can go straight into a home or collection.
