Finely carved early 19th century lifesize carrara marble figure of Anne of Cleves (1515-1557) inscribed ‘Anne de Cleve Reine’, possibly Italian - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:

The marble sculpture has a superbly carved face of Anne of Cleves wearing a lace hood with a belted high neck dress with lace decoration and necklaces including a cross all supported on a 19th century square socle (not original).

This sculpture is based on the figure from Hans Holbein the Younger’s (1497-1543) famous portrait of Anne of Cleves.

Hans Holbein the Younger was sent to Germany in 1539 to paint both Anne and her sister Amelia, it was from these paintings that Henry chose Anne to be his fourth wife and they married in 1540. However the marriage was also annulled in the same year but Anne remained on good terms with the King and as well as receiving the title of ‘the King’s sister’ also received property including Hever Castle in Kent, England, the former home of Anne Boleyn.

This carved figure was exhibited at The Grosvenor House Art & Antiques Fair, Park Lane, London in 2008 by Richard Crowther.

This figure is in excellent condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home or collection.
