A superb late 19th century Meiji period (1864-1912) large Japanese Satsuma koro or incense burner with cover.

This highly decorative piece consists of a cover to the top with gilt lion dog finial leading down to superb handpainted and gilt decoration on cream ground.

This leads down to the main body of the piece, having two gilt lion dog handles with superbly handpainted and gilt decoration on cream ground depicting traditional Japanese figures, possibly warriors and supported by three lion head feet.

The koro or incense burner was used to burn incense or perfune in its' solid form and the lion dog is symbolic in Japan - they tended to be placed at the entrance to religious sites as would hopefully ward off evil spirits.

This piece is in excellent condition for age, some wear to gilt commensurate with age, it is of stable construction and can go straight into a home and would make a superb statement piece !
