This bureau plat consists of a superb satin birch top inlaid with intricate marquetry decoration consisting of floral garlands, ribbons and cartouches with boxwood stringing, tulipwood banding and moulded goncalo alves edge, the long sides being of inverted serpentine form, the sides being of serpentine form.

This leads down to further superb marquetry inlaid floral and ribbon decoration to the shaped apron, again the long sides of inverted serpentine form and the ends of serpentine form, one side having a central drawer with ormolu mounts to either side.

The piece is supported by four ormolu mounted cabriole legs also with tulipwood banding and terminating with ormolu sabots to the feet.

Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845) was a dealer in both china and glass and later in antique furniture and was recorded as selling items to both William IV and Queen Victoria. There are a group of marquetry tables linked to him, one produced for the Dukes of Buccleuch in 1840 now in the Temple Newsam Collection.

The Blake family, Robert Blake and four sons, were masters of intricately designed marquetry work from London and were known to have worked with Edward Holmes Baldock over many years

This bureau plat is in excellent condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
