A late 19th century superb quality finely carved Japanese Meiji period padouk Shodana - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:

This cabinet (or shodana) consists of an arrangement of various sliding doors, shelves, cupboards and drawers.

The shodana has finely carved foliate decoration to the top and side with a central pair of sliding doors carved with chrysanthemums and bird decoration with geometric inlaid silver wire on the borders of the panels.

This leads down to an open section, the side panels being carved & pierced with bamboo designs and finely carved dragons to the front. This section has a superbly carved central divider of latticework, to the back are finely carved panels of birds including peacocks amongst chrysanthemums also with silver wire geometric inlaid decoration in the borders.

This leads down to a pair of cupboard doors, superbly carved with mountainous scenes, trees and temples also with inlaid silver wire inlaid decoration and each door having a small metal handle.

This section also has a bow-shaped cupboard carved with a vase of flowers with a cascading branch above, also with inlaid silver wire geometric inlaid decoration.

This leads down to three small carved drawers above carved and pierced foliate designs all supported by a carved and pierced base.

This cabinet is in exceptional condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home or collection.
