A late 19th century Breton walnut and elm bench of superb patina from Northern France - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:
This bench is typical of Breton style furniture due to the design on the back consisting of turnings and inlaid decoration often found on Breton beds and other furniture from the region.
The bench consists of a sophisticated walnut back panel with geometric designs and inlaid ebony and fruitwood decoration of chevron and star shaped designs and brass stud work including the year '1886'.
Below this are three arched sections each with three turned supports, inlaid decoration and three recessed fielded panels with shaped arms to each side and leading down to four rustic legs.
We feel this bench is possibly a marriage made from a Breton panel and a rustic base, the sophisticated back compliments the simplistic base to create a decorative and functional bench with a hint of naivety.
The bench in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home, it is a very versatile piece due to the size and could be used in various settings.
