The bronze depicts Artemis the goddess of hunting and the wild leaning against a tree trunk.

Artemis is wearing a chiton which is draped and gathered and she is pinning her cloak on her shoulder.

The original sculpture was part of the Borghese collection near Rome, the owners later forced to sell the sculpture to Napoleon where it was then displayed in The Louvre from 1820 until the present day.

This bronze is a reduction cast by the famous Parisian foundry F. Barbedienne, founded in 1838, and bears their signature and also the Collas reduction stamp.

The Barbedienne foundry was set up in 1838 by Ferdinand Barbedienne and Achille Collas, Collas invented a machine to create smaller bronze figures from statues of Greek & Roman origin in particular, of which this bronze is an example of. This foundry produced many fine pieces over the years and worked closely with many artists, two of the most famous being Barye and Rodin.

This bronze is in excellent condition with a good patina and can go straight into a home or collection.
