A superb quality late 17th century solid ebony low chair with intricate carving from The Coromandel Coast, India - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:

This chair, of museum quality, consists of a profusely carved back rail with a carved female figure to the centre surrounded by a wreath.

To either side are carved mermaids each holding a bird with seated monkeys and various foliate and floral decoration, the reverse of the back rail shows the back of the carvings giving a three dimensional appearance. 

The spindles are of rope twist design with the bottom rail carved with scrolling and pierced decoration.

The uprights to each side of the back have a carved face to the top leading down to profusely carved foliate decoration.

The seat has recently been re-caned using traditional methods to replicate the original cane work.

The seat rails and friezes to the front, sides and back are all profusely carved with floral and foliate decoration with pierced scrolled carving leading down to four spiral legs.

The legs are supported by four carved and pierced stretchers terminating with turned feet.   

This chair is of superb quality and of excellent condition for age and can go straight into a home or collection.
