SOLD

Code: LVS618

An early/mid 19th century 'plum pudding' mahogany tilt top table of superb patina and figuring and of large proportions in the style of P & MA Nicholson (1765-1844 and 1796-1842) - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:

This table consist of a superbly figured 'plum pudding' veneered mahogany top with a veneered edge supported by a superbly figured circular mahogany frieze with sixteen applied turned mahogany paterae.

This is supported by a solid mahogany turned circular column with a decoratively carved fluted collar leading down to a tri-form veneered 'plum pudding' mahogany base, the base having applied carved paterae decoration and terminating with carved tulip feet with brass castors.

The table would easily seat six and possibly up to eight.

The cabinet makers/designers P & MA Nicholson were father and son, Peter (the father) started as a cabinet maker and later also became an architect and mathematician. They particularly used Classical influences as well as contemporary designs and together wrote 'The Practical Cabinet maker, Upholsterer & Complete Decorator', most of the plates in this book being produced by the son, Michael Angelo. Some of these plates showing very similar examples to this table can be found on page 482 of the Antique Collectors Club book 'Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th century Furniture Design'.

This table is in very good condition, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
