Carved hardwood armchair from Bombay, India

SOLD

Code: LVS583

A highly decorative mid 19th century profusely carved hardwood armchair from the Bombay area of India of superb quality - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:

This chair consists of a profusely carved and pierced arched back depicting animals and foliage with a central oval panel with a carved lion and birds.

The shaped arms, also carved and pierced terminate with the head of a bear or beast with vine leaves coming from their mouths.

The drop-in seat is in excellent condition and has been re-covered in a leaf design fabric to compliment the chair (this can, however, be easily changed by the purchaser if necesary).

Below the seat is a foliate border which continues all around the chair and a serpentine shaped carved & pierced apron below this to the front.

The legs consist of a combination of animals, birds and fruit to create very decorative supports and terminate with peg feet.

This style of chair and carving is typical to that made in the Bombay area of India in the mid-late 19th century and it was thought that the highly carved furniture was a sign of the owner being affluent. Every possible surface was covered in carving, typically decorated with foliage and flowers and later animals such as birds, lions and beasts.

Similar examples can be seen in the book 'Furniture From British India & Ceylon' by Amin Jaffer, page 344, plate 159 and page 349, plate 164

This chair is in very good condition for age, it is of stable construction and can go straight into a home or collection. There are some minor losses which is to be expected, some have been repaired and others that we felt are not very noticeable have been left due to the complexity of the carving.
