A mid 19th century superb carved solid ebony easy chair from the Galle district (Ceylon/Sri Lanka).

This superb chair consists of a finely carved top rail with central scallop shell carving and finely carved birds to either side.

The uprights are of reeded and shaped form with volutes to the top with turned pateras.

The arms are shaped and finely carved at the ends with leaf decoration leading down to flared tassel and cup supports carved with stylized flower designs.

The side rails are reeded and the front seat rail is again finely carved with shell and leaf decoration with prominent flower carving at the top of the legs.

The turned and carved front legs are decorated with stylized leaf designs and terminate with turned feet,  the back legs are plain but shaped.

Both the seat and back rest are in the original cane and the chair also has a padded seat and back rest in a red fabric - this can easily be changed by the purchaser to a fabric of their choice by an upholsterer.

A very similar model can be found in the book 'Furniture from British India & Ceylon' by Amin Jaffer - page 378.

This design of chair was found in the pattern books of furniture designs used in the Galle district and in 1862 the Ceylon Court of the London Exhibition included both a carved ebony easy chair and two ebony chairs.

This chair is in excellent condition and can go straight into a home.
