Set of six Morris & Co. Sussex chairs

SOLD

Code: LVS517

A set of six Morris & Co. Sussex chairs designed by Phillip Webb, comprising of 2 carvers and 4 single chairs all in good, original condition purchased from a private collection.

The chairs consist of four turned spindles on the back rail leading down to a rush seat (all original and in good condition).

The arm supports go through the seat rail which is unusual design which is only found on this design of chair.

The chairs are supported by tapered legs with circular stretchers.

The Sussex chair was introduced by Morris & Co (William Morris) around 1864 remaining popular for many years and was still being produced, it still featured in their catalogue of 1911.

William Morris used the Sussex chairs in his own houses as did his great friend, the artist Edward Burne-Jones.

This chair design brought a new style to furniture as it was of simple structure, made from beech and stained in black or 'ebonised' with a rush seat and ideal for the smaller property.

The Sussex chair also influenced other top designers of the time such as Liberty & Heals who produced their own versions such as the 'Argyll' range at Liberty & Co.

This set of chairs are all of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
