Large Pair of 'Stag Hunt' oil paintings

A large pair of mid 17th century oil paintings 'The Stag Hunt' by the Circle of Frans Snyders (1579-1657). ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:

The paintings are in their original ebonised pine frames which is rare for works of this size & age.

The canvases underwent restoration in 1952 in Graz, Austria (one has details on the reverse) & the canvases were laid onto boards at this time which supports the paint layers. 

The original stitched ridges of the joins of the canvas can still be seen which is common with many larger canvas works that needed joining -  (the size of the canvas width was dictated by the loom size). 

Although the paint is worn in some parts, mainly in the darker areas, there are areas that have been strengthened which is consistent with the works' age and size. The paintings retain most of their original character with some areas such as the head of the leaping stag showing fine brushwork.

The depth of the renewed varnish layers has enhanced the paintings to bring out the drama of the design.

These paintings are very dramatic and would enhance the walls of any property.
