A late 18th century exceptional decorative pair of Continental console tables, possibly Italian.

The parquetry (geometric veneered) tops consists of geometric designs with the use of various woods.

The outer design is geometric & there are square fruitwood panels with an engraved design surrounded by other burr woods, fruitwood & boxwood.

The next section is more of a honeycomb design with a burr yew/elm with boxwood stringing & some inlaid flower decorations.

In the centre is a semi-circular panel of burr yew/elm or even possibly amboyna, surrounded by a semi-circular boxwood & mahogany stringing.

Encasing both of the tops is a border, an applied burr wood edging which is rounded in shape.

The bases are of semi-circular form with a burr elm wood frieze & mahogany & boxwood banding.

Each table has three legs & on these are various applied decorations. These are a walnut cross style decoration at the centre of the frieze, a circular turned fruitwood patera leading down to a shaped moulding & then three shaped burr wood decorations at the top of each leg.

The legs are a tapered shape & lead down to a walnut collar at the base of each leg.

These bases were possibly added at a later date, possibly in the 19thc & may have been originally painted & then stripped at a later time.

On the back edge of each top there is a rebate so the tables can be joined together to create a centre table. This makes these tables very versatile as they can either stand as separte pieces or join together as one.
