A fine carved 19thc Serpentine figure of The Knife Sharpener (Slave sharpening knife) in verde Prato stone, probably from The Grand Tour.

The verde Prato serpentine has been quarried for centuries near to Prato, northwest of Florence in Italy.

The Serpentine stone is so named due to the resemblance to the skin of a serpent.
The sculptor has portrayed that the slave has a sense of skill with the tool he is using.
This piece is in two parts as the main figure fits onto a separate solid base.
The photographs show old fractures in his right arm and the thumb from his left hand is missing although it is quite common to find fractures on a piece of this size, age and of this medium.
