Code: LVS938

SOLD

A large highly decorative mid 19th century Anglo Indian padouk centre table of circular form and with superb original patina from the Bombay area of India - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:

This table consists of a shaped superbly figured and well patinated solid padouk top of circular form with a shaped and carved moulded edge of leaf decoration, this leads down to a profusely carved and pierced shaped frieze with leaf and berry design.

The top is supported by a highly decorative base, the column being carved with cascading bunches of grapes leading down to the tri-form base also profusely carved and pierced with foliate and grape decoration terminating on scrolling foliate feet and standing on original porcelain castors.

Please note: in photo 2 the table top is in the tilted position - this is for photographic purposes only as due to the depth of the frieze although the top does have a tilting mechansim it was not originally made to be secured in the tilted position.

This style of carving is typical to that from the Bombay area of India in the mid-late 19th century and it was thought that the highly carved furniture was a sign of the owner being affluent. Every possible surface was covered in carving, typically decorated with foliage, fruit and flowers - similar examples of carving can be seen in the book 'Furniture From British India & Ceylon' by Amin Jaffer.

This table is in excellent condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
