An early 19th century (circa 1805) French Empire mahogany sofa table of superb patina and quality, attributed to Jean-Joseph Chapuis (1765-1864) - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:

This table consists of a solid mahogany top with drop leaves at each end with carved scrolling supports.

This leads down to a frieze fitted with two drawers, the front of the drawers consisting of 'plum pudding' mahogany with ormolu rams head mounts at each end, to the back is a 'plum pudding' mahogany frieze with rams head ormolu mounts at each end.

This leads down to the sophisticated base consisting of four supports of stylised swan heads with floral and foliate carving supported by a turned stretcher and terminating on four paw feet.

Jean-Joseph Chapuis was an excellent cabinetmaker born in Brussels and later trained in Paris. He was known for using quality materials and executing high levels of design, this table having Neoclassical influence from the period, which he was known for, with the rams head mounts and carved swan heads.

This table is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home or collection.
