A superb late Regency/William IVth (circa 1830) mahogany scroll back deep buttoned brown leather sofa with design influences of the notable 19th century furniture designers John Taylor and George Smith - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:
This sofa consists of a shaped mahogany back rail with carved foliate and scrolling decoration, the back, seat and arms of deep buttoned brown leather in excellent condition, the arm supports differ in design, one having a finely carved foliate design with gadroon collar and carved paterae, the other arm consisting of finely carved scrolling decoration.
This leads down to a moulded front rail supported by four tulip shaped legs, the front legs being carved, all supported by original brass castors, the back being upholstered with the same brown leather.
John Taylor and George Smith were working at the period this couch was made and design influences from both of them can be seen, similar examples can be found in the ‘Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th century Furniture Design’ – pages 292,301,302 and 317.
This sofa is in excellent condition for age, is of stable construction, is very comfortable and can go straight into a home etc.
