An 18th century carved carrara marble oval plaque of a Classical scene, possibly of ‘The Judgement Day of Paris’ - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:

This decorative and well carved plaque consists of a seated male, possibly Hermes, offering a fruit, possibly an apple, to three young goddesses.

‘The Judgement Day of Paris’ is a story from Greek mythology, it was an event that led up to the Trojan War: the golden apple (the fruit of temptation) was to be awarded to 'the fairest' of one of three beautiful women: Aphrodite, Hera and Athena.

Zeus was asked to mediate the contest and he ordered Hermes to lead the goddesses to Paris of Troy who was to make the decision and he chose Aphrodite.

This plaque is in excellent condition for age and can go straight into a home.
