A mid-late fine quality 19thc Serpentine carved bust of the Italian poet from the Medieval Ages, Dante purchased from a private collection.

This is a good example of Serpentine carving probably from The Grand Tour, the verde Prato serpentine has been quarried for centuries near to Prato, northwest of Florence in Italy.

The Serpentine stone is so named due to the resemblance to the skin of a serpent.

There are a few chips to this piece, as seen in the photographs, but this is not uncommon with items of this material.
