A highly decorative mid/late 19th century (circa 1870) Pietre Dure and gilt brass games box - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:

This decorative box consists of inlaid marble and semi-precious stones on black marble ground - this technique known as ‘Pietre Dure’, the top consisting of Ace playing cards from all card suits, heart, spade, diamond and club with inlaid counters and chips below surrounded by a gilt brass moulded edge. 

The top opening up to reveal a wooden interior with four compartments for storage of playing cards, counters, chips etc. (or this could also be used for storage of jewellery or other collections).

The front, sides and back all gilt brass with roundels of heart, spade, diamond and club Pietre Dure decoration, with moulded edge below, the sides with gilt brass carrying handles.

The Italian term ‘Pietra Dura’ or ‘Pietre Dure’ translating to ‘hard stone’ and often called ‘painting in stone’ was created during The Renaissance in Florence, Italy, a technique of inlaying different shaped and coloured specimen marbles and semi-precious stones into a background to create an image, this fine work found on table tops, boxes, vases, pictures and panels etc.

This box is in excellent condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
