Code: LVS954

£975.00

A pair of ash and beech Morris & Co. Sussex armchairs designed by Phillip Webb - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:

This pair of armchairs are unusual as they are not ebonised which is often the case with this design of chair, instead the backs, arms and back legs are ash, the front legs being beech.

They consist of four turned spindles to the back rail leading down to a rush seat (both original and in good condition).

The arm supports are fixed through the seat rail which is unusual design and is only found on this design of chair, the chairs are supported by tapered legs with circular stretchers.

The Sussex chair was introduced by Morris & Co (William Morris) around 1864 remaining popular for many years and was still being produced, it still featured in their catalogue of 1911.

William Morris used the Sussex chairs in his own houses as did his great friend, the artist Edward Burne-Jones.

This chair design brought a new style to furniture as it was of simple structure, mainly made from beech and often stained in black or 'ebonised' with a rush seat and ideal for the smaller property.

The Sussex chair also influenced other top designers of the time such as Liberty & Heals who produced their own versions such as the 'Argyll' range at Liberty & Co.

This pair of chairs are in excellent condition for age, are of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
